Winter Warm Up - Press Report
Scunthorpe opens athletics season in style
Nearly 250 athletes descended on Quibell Park the home of Scunthorpe and District athletics club for their annual warm up meeting. The meeting is used as a curtain raiser to the new season by many athletes who now travel from as far a field as Gateshead and North Wales in order to compete. For the fourth year running the club were lucky with the weather and the athletes arrived at the track to be greeted by a dry spring day. The dry and windless conditions meant many young athletes had an early season chance to achieve the qualifying times / distances for the English schools finals to be held later in the year at their very first attempt.
The day kicked off with the traditional hammer competition which saw over 20 athletes arrive early to start as others were still warming up. Amongst those were 8 competitors from Scunthorpe’s own hammer squad. It was a competition of mixed results with the ladies outshining the men. In particular Alex Lockett produced another throw of nearly 40m in the under 15 girls to cement her position near the top of the early season rankings, whilst team mate Jess WATSON broke 30m for the first time in the under 17 girls meaning the 34m needed for the English schools finals is definitely on the horizon. Joe GIBSON produced the longest throw of the day in the senior men’s event of nearly 50m and is now pushing towards the club record held by coach Matt HAMMOND. It was also the first chance for the squad’s newest member Georgia BONES to try out her new technique; it was to prove a successful day for Georgia who finished with 3 new personal bests in the hammer, shot and discus. Perhaps the biggest improvement of the day came from 15 year old Anthony GILLATT who after a disappointing Hammer put a huge 5 metres on his Discus best, despite having moved up a weight this year.
The meeting also saw many of the clubs under 11 athletes get their first chance of competing at a track and field event. Joshua LUGSDEN took full advantage winning the 80m,600m and the Long Jump , whilst there were also wins for Alicia GREGORY in the Long Jump and William TATE in the Cricket Ball throw. Proving that the clubs former coaches of the month, Gary and Debbie SPINDLEY are doing a great job bringing the next generation of stars through the clubs improving coaching set up.
It was also a day when the clubs sprinters got to fully stretch their legs and its going to be a good battle for title of the clubs quickest runner this year with 15 year old Nathan TOGUN winning the under17 event in 11.8 a time matched by Dom GREEN in the under 20 event. With Dan HARMES having already matched that time and the clubs jumps stars Ashley Wren and Josh Bones yet to stretch their legs over 100m’s it may take a time a lot nearer 11secs to be at the top of the pile by the end of the season
Other winners on the day were Freya Bradshaw with a new personal best in the under 17, 300m, Georgina O’CONNOR and Alice KAYE in the under 20, 300m and 150m, Leo ADAMSON in the u13 boys 80m,Ryan GOODARD and Alex NAIBAS in the under 17 Long Jump and 300m
The club are already planning their assault on various leagues and championships throughout the season.
