Scunthorpe Finish in 4th after first match
Report by Matt Hammond
Scunthorpe and District athletics club had the honour of hosting the first match in the National Junior league, at Quibell Park track. The league was founded in 1986 with the aim of providing competition to Under 20 and under 17 athletes and bridging the gap to senior competition. As the name suggests the league covers the whole of the country and Scunthorpe are currently in the Northern league, Humber division.
Despite the first match been on home turf it was a somewhat depleted Scunthorpe team that competed with approximately 12 athletes missing due to injury / holidays and even flight delays due to the recent volcanic ash. As with the previous year the Scunthorpe team was bolstered by several athletes from Lincoln who have joined the club as ‘second claim’ athletes as their home club is unable to put a team out on its own.
The league consists of 7 teams from all over the region and despite the abstractions the team did will against much bigger clubs to finish in 4th place beating local rivals Hull and Cleethorpes.
It was a busy day with many athletes competing in 3 or even 4 events. The day got off to an excellent start with the club gaining good points in the opening two events the Women’s hammer where Laura MAPPLETHORPE finished 2nd in the A string and Jessica WATSON winning the ‘B’ event. Then the men’s Long Jump where they went one better winning the A and B string with Matthew HOLDEN and Ashley WREN. Another athlete in fine form was Sophie CROFT, Sophie had suffered a slight injury during the week and hadn’t trained during the week however she still showed her early season form finishing 2nd in the 100m before powering her way to a clear victory in the 200m.
It was a young team that Scunthorpe played with many athletes still under 17 giving up to 4 years away to the older under 20 competitors so there were many first, third and fourth places for the team including Tyler LEY who has only just moved up to the under 17 age group but showed he has potential in the sprint events. Tyler finished 3rd in the 100m B event then 4th in the 200m B event both in new personal bests
It is a day when athletes try out new and less favoured events in order to win points. One of these athletes was Bethan HAMMOND who despite been a middle distance runner was persuaded to compete in the shot putt ,100m hurdles and 4x100m relay as well as her favoured 800m. Bethan had a good day recording 3 personal bests and even managing to win the ‘B’ 100M hurdles, before knocking a massive 7 seconds off her 800m personal best.
Unfortunately the day was to finish in disaster for Scunthorpe young jump star Ashley WREN when he tore his hamstring in the final event the 4x100m relay. Unfortuantely this looks a bad injury and may put Ashley out for several months.
After the event team manager Dave HARMES said ‘I am pleased with the result we had a lot of athletes missing, but the youngster did well’. He went on to say ‘with a full team I am sure we can finish in the top three at the next match’
The next match will see the team travel to Sheffield on 23rd May.
