Sunshine and showers for Scunthorpe youngsters

It was to be a week of sunshine and showers for the 29 Scunthorpe and district young athletes representing North Lincolnshire schools at the Humberside schools finals in Hull. The youngsters had earlier won selection at the Scunthorpe schools trials and were now competing against teams from East Riding, North Lincolnshire and Hull schools and as well as chasing the dream of been selected for the National English schools finals, which will be held at the Gateshead International stadium in July. In order to be selected the athletes had to come in the first two at the event and achieve a tough qualifying standard.

The event started in bright sunshine with Scunthorpe athletes Jacob HAMMOND and Andrew HARMES taking 1st and 2nd in the very first event the 400m hurdles with both athletes knocking nearly 3 seconds off their previous best times. It was to be a fete matched by Steph O’Connor and Freya Bradshaw in the 300m who also recorded a 1,2 with Steph coming out on top.

There were to be a number of personal bests set in the early sunshine. In the junior girls Jade STEWART in the 75m Hurdles, Danni LOVETT in Long Jump and 100m, Amy TOGUN and Emma ROBINSON in the Shot PUTT and the Discus. Intermediate girls saw Jess WATSON set yet another best in the Discus. Junior Boys there were personal bests for George INGHAM in the 400m and Ross EDGAR in the 1500m. Intermediate Boys Andrew HARMES in the 100m Hurdles, Kieran CONWAY in the 800m, Elliott STONES in the 1500m, Alex NABIAS in the 200m and 400m. Dom GREEN then equalled his best ever times in the 100m and 200m.

Then came the heavy rain in the afternoon just as North Lindsey college student Bethan HAMMOND was lining up in the 800m, after equalling her best in the 100m hurdles earlier in the day Bethan was hoping for a new fastest time in the 800m. But as the race went on the rain got heavier and heavier, but with 150m to go Bethan was still on course for a quick time however after the race she admitted she was so cold and wet she couldn’t feel her legs. So it was no surprise that she missed a new best performance and had to be satisfied with a season’s best. Somebody who did enjoy splashing through the puddles was Jake OXBY who smashed through the 10 minute barrier running 9mins 50 seconds in the 3000m. The hammer throwers also suffered the downpour which hit at the end of the 3rd round , but still saw wins for Alex LOCKETT  in the junior girls and Jess WATSON in the intermediate girls.

Three athletes went into the day able to enjoy the sunshine namely Ashley WREN, Josh BONES and Steph OCONNOR who all had the luxury of already having achieved the qualifying standard in the Long Jump , Triple Jump and 100m respectively. Although things went slightly wrong for the jumping pair with Ash suffering a slight muscle tear in his final jump and Josh not taking any jumps with an old injury flaring up.

However, following the championships 7 athletes were invited back to a mid week meeting arranged to allow athletes who were close to the qualifying standard to have a second chance. But again it was to be literally a case of sunshine and showers. The sunshine came for Dom GREEN who stormed to a new best of 11 seconds exactly in the 100m. The rain came for Ellie STANDERLINE and Jess WATSON, First Ellie added an amazing 14 cm to her best in the Long Jump but her jump of 5.02m was still 3cm short of the standard, perhaps the length of a toe. Then Jess went even closer when after a recent training session with former commonwealth champion  Dave SMITH where she was told bluntly what she had to do to improve she showed she had listened when she added over 3 metres to her previous best. But again suffered the agony of been 2cm short of the standard. There was also a new best for Danni LOVETT in the Long jump and Nathan TOGUN matched his best 100m time. Finally Ellicia BONES and Georgina O Connor were close to their bests in the Discus and Long Jump. With Humberside schools sticking strictly to the standards all the athletes will have one more chance before the closing date.

Those qualifying will be joined by club mate Alice KAYE who competed in the Lincolnshire schools championships due to the fact she is currently studying at Caistor Grammer. Alice won both the 200m and 400m and has qualifying standards in both events so has a hard decision to make.. Also competing in at the Lincolnshire schools event was twin sister Laura KAYE who finished second in the 1500m.
