London Marathon

Both the long range and shorter range weather forecasts predicted a hot day for this race. On the morning it was cold and damp, dustbin liners came in very handy. The weather cleared later but it was never warm enough to add to anyone’s discomfort.

Our first runner was Giles Byworth in 2.56, that is equivalent to 2 back to back half marathons in 1.28, most would be pleased to do one in that time. It was a return to form by Giles that he was understandingly very pleased with. Next was Gavin Mann in 3.24Pb and Chris Pendlebury 3.25 Pb with our first lady Lynne Haynes 3.40.Nick Taylor who got his entry through the club draw did 3.49Pb with Jack Cole 3.45 Ric Lings 3.56 Tom Stamp 4.07 and Julie Cole 4.19 all doing Pb’s. Andy Guest did 4.20, Richard Ogden 4.20, Glyn Sparks 4.26, Jim Betts and Terry Cole 4.45.Hilary Stephenson did 5.37 and Brenda Robinson 6.11.

Last year Terry Cole was quoted in the Evening Telegraph  that he would never run another marathon almost but not quite requoting Stephen Redgrave about being shot if he attempted  another one. Pity about that because there would be no shortage of volunteers.

Glyn Sparks was handicapped by his calf injury but the consolation for him instead of having an intense run was being able to interact with the crowd.

Brenda Robinson had a lot of injury problems coming into the race and did well to complete the race with daughter Vicky doing 5.18.

One feature of this years marathon was the number of runners who through injury and illness had to miss out, far more than any other year I can remember, so Carlos, Sue, Vicky, Paul, and Jenna we hope to see you next year.

Club 6 miles 13/05/2010

The race was at Burton and there were 51 entered on the night. The first lady and overall winner was Emma Cross in 47.36 with 2nd in 54.57 net 51.07  Michael Booth, 3rd was Jim Betts in 56.57 net 44.57 Pb. Following was Wendy Grant in 58.12 Helen Robinson 58.12 net 44.12 and Debb Pollard in 58.34.The best time on the night was Gary Crompton in 33.05 and for the ladies Rachel Fisk in 41.27.

Other Pb’s were Jack Cole 38.34 Tony Yeats 38.51 Pete Clay 59.47 Leeson Potter 42.12 Shaun Skelton 38.52 and Richard Ogden 45.02.

Lou and Bex made  guest appearances as marshalls although more in the manner of mermaids enticing ships on to the rocks.

After the race the chile con cardi always gives you a couple of interesting days.

Other races

The most interesting of these was the Rossington gallop which as the name suggested was a race

run on a course designed for horses including some jumps and crossing a stream. Times for that were Peter Barnard 42.47, Dave Etherington 48.25, Marion Mills51.09. Fiona Fisk 51.59, Derek Moffat 55.41, Bill Fisk 59.56, Lee Wesley 61.02 and Diane Eke 68.28. In the Hornsea third/ marathon Mel Hollis 63.03 Pb and Roger Lewis 64.04 3rd over 60.In the Beverley 10k Alberto Legido 35.57 Pb Mark Johnson 46.46 and Tony Lonsdale 47.12.Finally in the Shakespeare Marathon Sam Ritson did an excellent 3.52.47.

Annual General Meeting 29/04/2010.

The main changes at the AGM were that Rod Burton and Dick Faulkner stood down as Chairman and Vice Chairman being replaced by Dennis Whittaker and Sam Ritson. We now all now have to get used to the change from the playing fields of Eton to Ilkley moor bah tat. The treasurer reported a small loss for the year but the cash reserves showed the club to be in a healthy financial position.

April 2010

Club 6 - 21/03/2010 - Pleasant enough sunny day although this race clashed with the Lincoln 10K and the race for life. This meant that the numbers were down with only 29 runners. The only reason I will remember this race was the rare almost unique pleasure of going past ‘Lardy lad’  and leaving Fireman Sam cleaning his fire engine fading far away into the distance. Apart from that when the race sorted itself out the Wally in front of me was too far ahead to catch and the Wally behind me was too far behind to catch me. Just to see if anyone ever reads this newsletter the first one to tell me who the three runners were wins a mars bar.   The winner was Matt Isle 36.49 net 30.29; 2nd Tony Yeats 40.44 net 31.00; 3rd Bryan Byworth43.19 net 31.22 with the fastest Mathew Nutt 35.59.

Lincoln 10k - 21/03/2010 - There were 7 pbs in this race.   Alberto Legedo 36.46, Leeson Potter 44.47, Tom Stamp 45.37, Dave Etherington 46.04, Paul Coates 53.16, Beth Yewlett 55.58, and Helen Hornsby 56.22. Other times Darren Hepworth 45.32, Mark Johnson 46.54, Fiona Fisk 48.42, and Michael Stamp 52.10.    Helen was in 2397 position so there must have been a massive turn out for this race.

East Hull 20miles 28/03/2010 - Traditionally a warm up race for the London Marathon all the first 7 from our club got pbs in a race that I am told it is better to take it steady rather than race it and leave it there instead of the marathon.  The times being; Ville Tiitola 2.23, Glyn Sparks 2.38, Rowan Turner 2.38, Carlo Catalano 2.38, Terry Cole 2.46, Nick Taylor 2.47 and Richard Ogden 3.04 all in pbs.  Other times were Ric Lings 2.51, Julie Cole 3.17 and Anne Powell 3.19.

Club 3 - 1/04/2010 - Looking through the results I am amazed at the number of pbs recorded. It was cold and the wind was strong and against us two thirds of the way therefore not good conditions for running. There was also a lot from the track section to swell the numbers and who dominated the race. Jonathan Maxfield was 1st in 16.14, 2nd Gary Crompton 16.25, 3rd Gavin Mann 16.39, then all doing pbs - Scott Mitchell 4th in 16.48, 5th Alberto Legedo 16.51, and Lewis Stones 6th in 17.29. Other pbs were Glyn Sparks in great form building up to the London Marathon 19.25, Rachel Fisk 20.23, Rowan Turner 20.41, Mark Johnson 21.02 Dave Etherington 21.33 Kay Sotheran our most improved lady 22.37, and Mark Burrows who is improving with every race 23.46.   It was great to have so many from the track section in the race the trouble is they cannot cope with distances over 5 miles so we may not see them again this summer.

The Friskney Half Marathon 11/04/2010 - After a hard winter of marathon training I wanted to do my usual spring half marathon. Last year it was Sheffield but at £18 it was too expensive. Lou and Bex had entered this run so I didn’t need any persuasion to enter , not that I got any anyway.  It takes place in the Fenland between Boston and Skegness and it is the flattest half marathon I have ever run with one country lane undistinguishable from another.  Without the satnav we would have been totally lost going in and going out. The highlight was Mel Hollis winning the 3rd over 60s prize with 1.47.59.   Lou and Bex did 2.01.29 which was a pb by all of 17 seconds.

Club 5 - 13/04/2010 - Very similar to the 3 miles another cold and windy Burringham night.  Again the track section were well represented.  The winner was Pumlani in 27.10 2nd Gary Crompton 28.08 and 3rd Gavin Mann 28.45.   In the ladies Rowan Turner turned the tables on Rachel Fisk 35.02 to 36.43 with Debbie Drinkall returning  in 3rd at 38.32.   Some newcomers to watch out for were Amanda Panton 47.25, Alex Rawson 47.59, Maggie Tate 50.51 and Louise Long 54.17.   Glyn Sparks dropped out with a calf injury and with London only just over a week away hopefully this will not prevent him from running.
