18th May 2009 - Message from Derek Moffatt
Sunday May 17th saw the inaugural running of the Tickhill Running & Athletic Club 10 mile multi terrain race, known as the "off T R A C10", just south of Doncaster. It consists of farm dirt tracks, the crossing of 2 separate stiles with attendant delays & queues, some smooth tarmaced by ways, lots of field edges, grass strips, several ploughed fields, a section of sticky bare soil that weighs down your shoes, finishing off with a lengthy run through a narrow gap in a shoulder high oil seed rape crop. In other words, exactly what it says on the tin, multi terrain.
Main points:
- It is very nearly flat, in open countryside, and with no hills as such.
- A lot of "follow the leader" type of narrow paths making overtaking hard or impossible at times.
- Despite heavy recent rain, it was possible to sneak round the edge of all the huge puddles and keep your feet dry.
- Mile boards nicely visible but not accurately placed.
- 1 drinks station at 5 miles and 1 at end.
- Marshalling fine.
- No secure baggage store and very limited loos.
- About 150 entrants including what looked like most of the Maltby Club. Well worth a look at for 2010.
- I would certainly run it again.
Derek Moffatt, your spy and only Scunny runner.
p.s. very cheap entry, only £6.
