ANDREW WALKS INTO FIRST NATIONAL FINAL

Report by Matt Hammond

Scunthorpe and District athlete Andrew Harmes has had the honour of being the first athlete from the club to be selected to represent Humberside Schools at Race Walking. Andrew will be making his way down to Stoke this weekend to compete in the English schools race walking championships. The championships are been held in conjunction with the Multi events finals and Andrew is one of only 3 Humberside athletes who will be competing in the walking event. He will be lining up in the Junior Boys (under 15) 3000m with athletes from as far a field as.Kent and Merseyside

Although Andrew competes in a variety of other events his talent for walking had been spotted by the Humberside team manager Mike Nicholson, when Andrew was having a go at the 2000m Walk during a Humberside Track and field league. Andrew came second in the event and was only just outside the club record.

Mike Nicholson said ‘Andrew has a running style that restrict his running abilty slightly but lends itself ideally to race walking, I have started to do some technique work with him and although he struggled at first he has made great improvement over the last week’

Mike went onto say ‘ I was keen for Andrew to come down to the championships with us as i can see he has potential in the walking events and I hope this will encourage Andrew to compete more’

Andrew will follow a number of other Scunthorpe athletes who have appeared on the national stage this year and everybody at the club hopes he will be successful.
