Frequently Asked Questions

Where do we meet?

The Road Running section of the Scunthorpe and District Athletic Club, meet at the rear entrance to Brumby Hall, the Corus Sports & Social at the end of Centenary Way Club (See map for detail).

When do we train?

We meet twice each week; Tuesday, to start running at 7.0 p.m. and Thursday, to start running at 6.30 p.m. Runners are advised to arrive 10 or 15 minutes beforehand.

How many turn up?

Typically we have about 35/45 turn up on a Tuesday, and 25/35 on a Thursday (total membership about 115).

How long is the training?

Typical sessions last for from 50 to 75 minutes. We mix structured sessions with longer group runs through various parts of Scunthorpe (often finding a hill en-route). We publish a monthly training programme at the month start so people know what they will be doing. Click here for the Training page.

Where do I get changed?

We have use of changing rooms and hot showers. The entrance is an unmarked red door around the back, but there are generally folk milling about to guide you.

Who’s in charge?

Ask for Dot Bontoft (Chief Coach), Roger Lewis or Dennis Whittaker - they will put you straight, and make sure that you start off with a suitable group. We have a several qualified coaches who cater for different levels of ability and goals, from absolute beginners (Walk/run sessions) to those chasing ‘good for age’ London marathon times (or better).

What distances are covered?

Members compete right through 3k to 100k in road races, cross-countries, trail races, from 800m - 5000m on the track (a minority past-time !), fell and adventure races, with some doing Duathlons, Triathlons and Quadrathlons too. We have a current UK age group record holder, and an Age group Quadrathlon current world champion. Many members compete nearly every week – locally, across the UK and even abroad. But also many members who just love to run for running’s sake, or as an opportunity to socialise while keeping fit.

What are the age ranges of the runners?

There is also a good mix of ages (majority are ‘mature’ but we are getting quite a few younger folk joining now), and about a 55/45 m/f gender mix.

How much does it all cost?

Our £28 annual subscription runs from I April – 31 March - there are no additional fees except to enter actual Club events (generally £1.50 - £2.00). After 1/10 we charge £14 to join. After 1/1 it would be £8 only. The membership includes £15 Subscription to the Corus Sports & Social Club, whose changing & shower facilities we use, plus their comfortable and cheap bar facilities. Club members get a free t-shirt and high viz tabard (wearing of this is mandatory in winter club events).

Do you do anything else on other days?

In addition to the two nights a week club training nights some members also meet (for part of the year) for a longer Sunday run (10-15 miles) – usually from Messingham. Although the week day training runs are often in the range of 6-9 miles, most have shorter options regarding the routes, and there is almost always a group of ‘beginners’ and those wanting an easier run (coming back from illness or injury) doing an alternative route with one of our coaches (we have 2 women coaches and two/three men). It’s all pretty laid back, but members are encouraged to achieve specific goals if they want to – but there is no pressure to.

Will I be the odd one out?

We have had a large influx of new members in the last few months so that there will be plenty of folk who will understand that newbie feeling, and will help you settle in.
