Match 4

Youngsters finish the season on all time high

With their league position already secure 30 youngsters from Scunthorpe and District Athletic club travelled to Spinkhill near Sheffield to see how high they could finish up the league. This time they had the unenviable task of competing against the home team 2DASH and the league leaders Rotherham. So they could be forgiven for not quite matching their previous highest score, but the youngsters gave it their best shot coming second to Rotherham with 399.5 points. Although slightly disappointed not to smash through the 400 point  barrier for the 4th time in a row team manager Eve STANDERLINE was more than happy ‘ This has been a fantastic season, last year was our first at this level and we only just survived, this time we have showed we belong at this level and we can compete against the best’, she went onto say ‘ I’ve no doubt if it wasn’t for a couple of injuries which meant athletes had to pull out of several events I think we would have matched our best score’.

The youngsters couldn’t match their record  28 record first places from the last match but came very close with 27 wins. This time it was the throwers who notched up the victories. Leading the way were the under 17 Women winning all their throwing events. Jess WATSON won the hammer and shot with Elicia BONES coming second then Elicia won the Discus and Jess was second. Finally Shani STATHERS made it a clean sweep by winning the javelin. Not far behind were the under 17 men with Nathan TOGUN winning the shot and Discus with new personal bests and Anthony GILLATT the hammer with a best, but Anthony couldn’t quite make it a clean sweep when he came second in the Javelin. The points continued to role in, in the under 15 girls with Alex LOCKETT winning the Shot and coming second in the Discus and team mates Georgia BONES and Emma ROBINSON gaining third places in the Discus and Javelin.

The meeting also saw Emily STRICKLAND take a hat trick of victories in the under 13 girls for the second time in a row when she won the 75m, 150m and 70m hurdles, setting new bests in the 75m and the hurdles. What is even more amazing is that this is Emily’s first year in the age group and no doubt she will challenge the club records next year. Another young athlete in the victories again was Leo ADAMSON who won the High Jump and Long jump for the second time but despite setting a new best in the hurdles had to settle for second place in the hurdles.

One athlete who has been an ever present throughout all 4 league matches has been Freya BRADSHAW who has won 9 out of 12 events she has run including all four 300 hurdles. Matching the 4 in a row was Ellie STANDERLINE who had won all four Long Jumps although it was heart ache for both Ellie and Jess WATSON as both went into the final match knowing it was their last chance to qualify for the English schools finals but neither could quite make it meaning Ellie missed the Long Jump by 3 cm and Jess the hammer by 2 cm’s.

After the points had come in from the 3 different matches taking place in Division 1, the Scunthorpe athletes had amassed 1681.5 points nearly 500 more than last year and claimed 5th place out of the 9 teams, beating local rivals Cleethorpes. With only 5 athletes too old to compete next year team manager Eve will be looking to improve on this year’s achievement.
