Match 3

Youngsters achieve record score

It was a bus full of happy smiling faces, when Scunthorpe and District Athletics club youngsters travelled back from their latest match in the Northern Division 1 of the National Young athletes’ league at Derby. Not only had the youngsters won their section of the match against Hallamshire Harriers and Boston, but they had achieved their highest number of points ever in a Young athlete’s league which is contested by athletes aged between 11-16

Team manager Eve STANDERLINE had put together a strong team of 30 athletes to make the longest trip of the campaign down the M1 to Derby. The youngsters were not to let her down when they recorded 28 1st places.

It was to be the club sprinters who were to lead the way by dominating the sprint events during the afternoon. The Moorways stadium is renowned as a fast track with the stadium record been held by none other than Olympic star Linford Christie. Even though it was a strong side wind, the first to make the best of the fast conditions was Steph OCONNOR who had a  double reason to celebrate as she not only won the 100m and 200m , but she set a new best time in the 100m of 12.6 which achieved the qualifying time for the  English schools finals. Also achieving a double success was Jacob SHANNON who is in his first season of competition, Jacob was to win both the under 13 boy’s 100m and 200m. Emily STRICKLAND was to beat Jacob’s success as she not only won the under 13 girls 75m and 150m events setting new personal bests but she also won the 70m hurdles. The sprint success continued with Leo ADAMSON winning the 75m hurdles, before he added 10cm to his best in the High Jump. Next was Nathan TOGUN who won the under 17 men’s 100m in a fast time of 11.6 just outside his best of 11.5. Scunthorpe was then to emphasise their dominance by winning the U13 boys, U13 girls, U17 boys and u17 girls 4x100m relays.

The throwers were not far behind with Alex LOCKETT and Emma ROBINSON winning the under 15 girls Discus and Javelin. The under 17 girls did even better when between the three of them Jess WATSON, Elicia BONES and Shani STATHERS won all four of the throwing events in their age group with Jess winning the hammer , Elicia the discus and shot and Shani the javelin. This was repeated by the under 17 boys with Anthony GILLATT having a triple success in the Hammer , Discus and Javelin and Nathan TOGUN adding to his earlier sprint success by winning the shot putt.

The league is also a chance for the club to give new and inexperienced athletes their first chance to compete , this match saw 11 year old Henry FOSTER do his first race when he came second in the 100m , then after a quick lesson from one of the throws coaches he earned a 3rd place in the shot putt. Competing in only his second event was 15 year old Liam RILEY who set best times in the 100m and 200m before gaining a second place in Shot putt.

Throughout the afternoon the points totals were nip and tuck between Scunthorpe and Hallamshire with Boston been left behind. As the final scores came in Team manager Eve was even more shocked when she realised the club had scored 463 points, over 50 points more than the previous meeting. This means the club has now scored nearly 1300 points in the first 3 meetings and have already surpassed their total from 4 matches last year. Eve said’ After last year’s survival by only 1 point, we have done fab I am so pleased with all my athletes’
