Scunthorpe push into promotion contention
Scunthorpe and District athletics club junior athletes have pushed themselves into promotion contention after the second of 4 matches in the Northern area, Humber division of the National Junior league.
As with the first meeting the Scunthorpe team was bolstered by several athletes from Lincoln who have joined the club, as their home club is unable to put a team out on its own. But even with those additions team manager Dave HARMES couldn’t have hoped for such a good result as the team were missing several key members including the clubs jump stars Ash WREN and Josh BONES who were competing for Humberside at the Intercounties in Bedford. However he was bolstered by several athletes making their first appearance in the league this year.
One such new comer was Jake OXBY; Jake has joined the club this winter having only previously run at school events. Training under the guidance of the middle distances coaches at the club has brought him immediate improvement. This was shown when he competed in the 3,000m where not only did he achieve an excellent second place but he also knocked 18 seconds off his best time when running for Scunthorpe schools last year. Jake admitted afterwards when he learns to pace the race better, having gone off to fast he is sure he will be able to crash through the 10 minute barrier. That was to be the start of a busy day for Jake when after only an hour’s rest he lined up in the 1500m again earning good points in 4th place, before answering an SOS by the 4x400m team replacing an athlete that had injured himself in an earlier race.
In athletics like many sports hard training and patience is eventually rewarded , this was the case for 17 year old Georgina O’CONNOR who has been trying to break through the 5 metre barrier in the Long Jump for the last 18 months and had previously recorded 8 jumps between 4.90m and 4.98m. Having been so close so many times she was delighted to record 4 jumps over 5m in one competition the furthest of which was recorded as 5.27m only 13 cm of qualifying for the English schools national finals.
The club has many strong family units competing and it was to be the turn of the KAYE sisters to shine with Alice winning the 200m, 400m and 400m hurdles, whilst Laura won the B 3,000m and was second in the 800m. Both girls have been revising heavily for exams and like a lot of the young athletes training has had to take a little bit of a back seat.
The reward for the bravest performance of the day went to Jess WATSON who suffered the embarrassment and pain of falling over whilst in full flow in the first round of the hammer injuring her hand which she put down to save herself. Despite this Jess was able to dust herself down and with the aid of an ice pack carried on to finish in second place with a throw just outside her best. Then went onto set a new best performance in the Javelin and produced a good throw to finish 3rd in the Discus.
With the re introduction of the clubs internal rankings this season, two youngsters are determined to battle for the top spot in the Javelin. Anthony GILLATT and Jacob HAMMOND who are both only 15 and will be eligible for this under 20’s league for another 3 seasons have been having a personal dual in the Javelin throwing their own weight implement as under 17 athletes as well as the heavier implement in the under 20’s. The previous day multi eventer Jacob beat thrower Anthony by centimetres in an event at Cleethorpes with the 700gm javelin, but Anthony got his revenge with the 800gm implement when he won by just 19 cm’s. It will be interesting to see how much the pair improves by over the next 3 years.
As the points were counted the key to Scunthorpe’s successful day was that the club was able to maintain their good start that had seen them finish third in the first meeting and by scoring a single extra point this time they achieved a creditable second place because other teams were unable to match their own performance from the first meeting. This also pushed the team up to second place overall after 2 matches and with two teams to be promoted team manager Dave HARMES said ‘I am very pleased with the result, the key was been able to cover nearly all of the events especially in the girls section.’ He went on to say ‘I know we can put out an even stronger team when everybody is available, so promotion is definitely a possibility this year’
The next match will see the team travel to Doncaster on Sunday 10th July.
