Scunthorpe makes home advantage pay
Scunthorpe athletes had the advantage of competing on home turf at Quibell Park for the second match of the 4 match young athletes series. When they took on local rivals Lincoln Wellington and Cleethorpes. After making a good start in the first match at Rotherham when the team scored over 400 points, team manager Eve STANDERLINE was determined to keep it going knowing if the club could keep an average of 400 points per match their division 1 status in the Northern section of the National Young athletes league would be secure. With this in mind Eve was able to put out nearly a full squad of 36 athletes and was faced with the nice position of having more athletes than events in some age groups.
It was to be a day of very strong winds but this proved to be an advantage in the home straight leading to some very quick sprint times and good jumps with many athletes recording personal bests. One such athlete was Ellie STANDERLINE who recorded two personal bests in the 100m and Long Jump. Her effort in the long jump was only 16cm short of the qualifying standard for the English schools national finals. She was closely followed by Danni LOVETT who set a best time in the 200m and would have no doubt done the same in the Long jump if the 200m hadn’t come in the middle of the event. With the athletes finishing 1st and 2nd in the long jump the team mates will renew their rivalry at the Humberside schools trials when they will both be chasing the qualifying mark.
Another to take full advantage of the conditions was 15 year old sprint star Nathan TOGUN who set a stunning time of 11.5 in the 100m winning by nearly half a second. He then went on to show his physical strength winning both the shot putt and the discus.
Although the wind was advantageous for the home straight it meant any event involving a full lap had to battle into the wind all the way down the long back straight which made the fact Freya BRADSHAW was able to run within 0.1 of second to win both the 300m and 300m Hurdles .Then Hannah DUNKERLEY set a personal best by nearly 2 seconds in the 300m Hurdles
Chris ANDREW in the under 15 boys was one of the highest point scores on the day when he not only won the 100m and Javelin along with a second in the Long Jump but also set personal bests in all three events a feat that was matched by under 15 team mate George INGHAM in the 400m, 800m and Javelin. George is proving to have a good range of events anywhere from 200m up to 1500m.
The biggest improvement of the day was by 13 year old Ross EDGAR who took nearly 22 seconds of his 1500m best when he ran 5.15 in the 1500m, when the wind is taken into consideration Ross must be hoping for a clocking much nearer 5 minutes in still conditions
It was a day that the team manager Eve took the chance of blooding new athletes in their first ever league match for the club and they didn’t disappoint with Kira FOSTER, Lucy CHROST, Danielle TAYLOR ,John BATTY, Fraser HORSFIELD, Jacob SHANNON and Bradley WEAVER all winning good points in the under 13 age group.
As the day drew to an end Eve could see that the team had more than matched her target of 400 points with a total of over 414 and secured second place on the day. After the event she said ‘it was such a good day, with some excellent performances and new personal bests that it is hard for me to pick an athlete of the match’ She went onto say ‘what really made a difference was having enough athletes to cover all the relays that really pushed our points up’
The young team will next be in action on Sunday 5th June when they will have make their longest trip of this year’s campaign down to DERBY. When it is hoped an equally strong team will again be able to break the 400 point barrier.
