Andrew helps Scunthorpe Youngsters start the season in good form
Following a successful campaign last year that saw Scunthorpe and district young athletes avoid relegation from Northern Division 1 of the National Young athletes’ league, by the equivalent of goal difference sending local rivals Barnsley into the lower divisions The club finds their youngsters having to repeat the fete Northern Division 1 South east against teams from: Lincoln Wellington, Hallamshire Harriers, Spenborough, 2DASH, Cleethorpes, , Boston, Rotherham and Oldham. The league is split into four meetings with three teams competing in each meeting which means all teams will face each other during the course of the four meetings. The points scored in each match are then added together to decide the league placings
The league is for athletes under the age of 17 and is split into different age groups namely under 17 , 15 and 13 boys and girls .Each team is able to put two athletes in each event with 6 points given to 1st down to 1 point for 6th place. Team manger Eve STANDERLINE was aware that her main problem last year was that teams were able to put many more athletes into matches than the Scunthorpe and District team. Determined not to suffer the same problem Eve managed to put together a team of 26 young athletes to do battle at the first match held at Rotherham against teams from Oldham and Spenborough.
The young team were able to rise to the challenge even if times and distances were to suffer in the very windy conditions. But the conditions were not to phase 15 year old Andrew HARMES when competing in the triple jump he amazed his coach and family a like by jumping 10.79m adding 1.81m to his best of last year winning the event from his team mate Tomas ANDREW who himself set a creditable 10.75m.This was just deserve from Andrew who is an ever present at training and always gives his best, the addition of weight training to his training programme seems to have added that much needed strength and has seen him already set many new best this year in the under 17 age group. Both Andrew and Tomas were to add more points during the day with Andrew finishing 2nd in both the 100m and 400m hurdles and Tomas 2nd in the 100m and long jump. The under 17 Boys age group was to prove the strongest for the club with the boys winning 12 of 17 events. Nathan TOGUN 100m ,200m and long jump, Alex NABIAS 400m and long jump, Jacob HAMMOND 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles, Anthony GILLATT rounded the day off with a hat-trick of wins in the hammer, discus and javelin. Before Tomas, Alex, Jacob and Andrew rounded the day off with victory in the 4x 400m relay. Other victories for the boys came from Leo ADAMSON with another hat trick in the 75m hurdles, 100m and high jump, Mitchell BAILES in the 200m and long jump both competing in the under 13 Boys. Chris ANDREW then provided the only win in the under 15 boys with his victory in the long jump,
It was to be a day of plenty of 1st places for the girls as well. In the under 15 Girls Rosie TATE won the 75m hurdles, Jade STEWART the 800m, Ellie STANDERLINE the long jump, Alex LOCKETT the discus and shot putt, Emma ROBINSON the javelin . The Under 17 Girls saw Shani STATHERS have a hat trick of wins in the 80m hurdles, high jump and javelin; Freya BRADSHAW won the 300m hurdles, Jess WATSON the hammer. Elicia BONES then showed that although the conditions hampered many of the running events it was perfect for the throws when she released the perfect effort in the discus which sailed out to a new best and club record of 30.03m.
As the final scores came in Scunthorpe were to break the 400 points mark something they failed to achieve in any of the 4 matches last year and saw them finish in second place. Afterwards team manager EVE said ‘This was a great result, hopefully one we can repeat throughout the season’ The next match is a home fixture for Scunthorpe and District athletics club down at Quibell Park.
