Match 1

Scunthorpe juniors start the season with 3rd place

Scunthorpe and District athletics club junior athletes travelled to Rotherham to compete in the National Junior league the first league meeting of the track and field season. The league was founded in 1986 with the aim of providing competition to Under 20 and under 17 athletes and bridging the gap to senior competition. As the name suggests the league covers the whole of the country. Scunthorpe are currently in the Northern area, Humber division alongside local rivals Doncaster, Hull, Rotherham, Sheffield and Boston

As with the previous year the Scunthorpe team was bolstered by several athletes from Lincoln who have joined the club, as their home club is unable to put a team out on its own.

The athletes arrived at Rotherham to be greeted by sunshine and gale force winds which were swirling around the arena and would be a head wind one minute and a cross wind the next. Making conditions extremely difficult for all the athletes none more so than the Long Jump which saw the clubs jump stars Ashley WREN and Josh BONES been physically blown about by the cross winds resulting in some very funny landing positions. Both will have been happy with their position in the A and B competition because of the conditions.

The meeting was to see team managers Dave HARMES and Neil BONES give many of Scunthorpe’s 1st year under 17 athletes their first taste of competition in this league. With many of them still 15 years old it meant they were giving up to 4 years away to the older athletes. Never the less the youngsters were to do the team proud with Nathan TOGUN winning the B 100m and finishing second in the B 200m, Jacob HAMMOND finished 3rd in the pole vault putting over 30cm on his previous best performance. Thomas Andrew 4th in the A and Andrew HARMES finishing second in the B Triple Jump. Hannah DUNKERLEY finished 3rd in the B High Jump. Perhaps the young athlete with the biggest challenge was Anthony GILLATT who is now concentrating on the throwing events having just moved up to the under 17 event he has seen all the throwing implements get heavier. But when competing as an under 20 in the league the weight is even heavier. This made his performances even more outstanding when he came 1st in the B Discus, 3rd in the B javelin and 4th in the A hammer. Resulting in clubs throws Coach Matt HAMMOND predicting his young protégé will be challenging him for a place in the senior team within 2 years.

Despite the conditions one of the best performances of the day was Alice KAYE in the 400m which saw her winning by over 2 seconds and still breaking 60 seconds even though she was able to jog home after such a comfortable win. Other winners on the day were Freya BRADSHAW in the A 400m Hurdles and Bethan HAMMOND in the B 400m and 100m Hurdles. Laura MAPLETHORPE and Jess WATSON in the A and B hammer event

.After all the points were counted Scunthorpe were to finish in an excellent 3 rd place matching their best result from last year.

Team manager Dave HARMES said ‘I am very pleased with the result we are a young team and to beat some much larger teams including Rotherham at their home meeting is a brilliant result.’ He went on to say ‘Hopefully we can match that again during the season’

The next match will see the team travel to Hull on 29th May.
