Leeds Abbey Dash

Leeds Abbey Dash 10k, Sunday 23rd November 2008 - Reporter, Dave Sharpe

Press Report

Lindsay Skinner, Nicola Geddes and Jenny Clayton were in action in the recent Leeds Abbey Dash 10k on Nov 23rd . This is one of the area's premier 'end of year' road races and always attracts some of the areas best runners. The course is both fast and flat and if the weather conditions are right a 'Personal Best' is possible.

Although there was a light covering of snow and icy conditions under foot, the day turned out to be a good one. The wind had died down and the ice melted by the time the field of over 4000 set off.

Both Lindsay and Nicola set off at a blistering pace, going through the 1st kilometre in 3.15 and then, sharing the work load, went through 5k in 17.33. Sensing a PB for 10k they went through 5 miles in a PB of 27.54 .

Coming into the final 200 metres both of the girls were chasing down more established athletes and Lindsay just beat her sister (Nicola) to finish in a time of 34.50 as 6th woman home and, more importantly, taking 1 minute 47 seconds off her PB. Nicola finished in a time of 34.52 and 7th woman home taking 1 minute 51 seconds off her PB.

This result will hopefully get them the recognition they deserve as it will propel them into the top 40 for 10k in the UK .

The twins can now focus on the up and coming Cross Country races with renewed confidence and then focus on the road races next year as they improve under the guidance of their coach Dave Sharpe.

Jenny Clayton who is also a member of Scunthorpe & District Athletic Club ran close to her PB and her time of 46.53 enabled her to finish in 1273th position out of a field of 4000 and 180th in the women's section. Jenny also looks set to compete and do well in the up and coming Cross Country races over the winter.
