Ashley jumps to victory in first outing
Northern Indoor - 12th December 2009
A group of 6 young Scunthorpe and district athletes travelled to the English Institute of sport at Sheffield to compete in the second Northern Indoor open meeting of the winter. The world class facilities provided the athletes another chance to check out how their winters work is progressing.
First on was Scunthorpe’s rising Long jump star Ashley WREN. 2009 has been an outstanding season for Ashley who had won medals at national events before injury struck at the final outdoor meeting of the year when he pulled his hamstring when on course for a personal best in the 200m. This was Ashley’s first chance to test out the injury following his enforced lay off. He showed everything is going to plan with a good jump of 6.39 in the under17’s which was the longest jump of the day beating all of the senior athletes. It is now back to the hard winters training to reach his 2010 target of 7 metres.
Next on was Ellie STANDERLINE who is following hard on the heels of Scunthorpe’s older sprint stars. Ellie who has only just moved up to the under 15 age group is showing the rewards for all the hard training she has done with good performances in the 60m. Although not as quick as her time at the first meeting Ellie showed why she is ranked in the top 100 in the country this indoor season. She then rounded of the day with a good jump of 4.22 in the long jump the 5th furthest by an under 15 girl on the day.
Also present were 4 members of the clubs multi events group who under the guidance of club coach Dave HARMES will be using the facilities at Sheffield to continue training during the winter. Hopefully one of them may have the same success as local Sheffield athlete Jessica ENNIS who also trains there.
The eldest member of the group Daniel HARMES used the meeting to add some sharpness to his winters speed sessions with outings in the 60m and 300m although slightly slower than he wanted in the 60m Daniel showed great speed endurance with a time of 37.45 in the 300m. Showing he is on course to break 50 seconds next year in the 400m.
Next on were the clubs two under 15 boys Anthony GILLATT and Jacob HAMMOND who had a busy afternoon competing in 3 events two of which the shot putt and 60m ran at the same time. This meant the athletes literally had to sprint from the shot circle to the start of the 60m and then back again. Despite this, both achieved a personal best in the 60m and the shot. Their final event the long jump saw both of them again close to their best performance.
Last on was Elicia BONES in the under 17 girls shot, as reported at the first event this winter in a transition phase for Elicia who has moved up an age group and is throwing an heavier shot. But she showed things are moving in the right direction when she bettered her performance from the first meeting to finish in 5th place.
All of the athletes will only take a short break over the Christmas period, with priority been to continue with the hard winters training before heading to the northern indoor championships in January.
