Scunthorpe Youngsters enjoy the heat
The second Humberside track league saw the Scunthorpe youngsters get the chance to compete in the sun at their home track, with the event been held in the splendid sunshine of the hottest weekend of the year at Quibell park. As always the event is a friendly league with the emphasis to come and have a go.
This was shown by Scunthorpe giving a debut to one of their new members Nathan Togun in the under 15 boy’s triple jump. Nathan had been spotted at a schools event and invited down to the track to train by club coach Dave HARMES. Nathan proved he has great potential when at his first ever event he finished 1st with a distance which ranks him 53rd in the country. The hope now is that Nathan can improve further alongside the clubs established jumper Josh BONES. Also in the triple Jump the club showed great depth with Anthony GILLATT coming second, Chris ANDREWS third and Andrew HARMES 6th. As is becoming the case in the under 15 boys there were plenty of first places with Callum SMITH recording a sprint double , Alex MERRILLS winning the shot, and Anthony GILLATT the Javelin.
The under 11 age group was out in force at the event, the age group is coached by Gary and Debbie Spindley who can have over 50 athletes training on a club night. The emphasis with this age group is to get them to have a go at all events and have fun doing it. This time 10 of them competed in a variety of short sprints, throws and jumps. They were led by Jack GREGORY who won the 80m, 150m and long jump and he was closely followed by Emily STRICKLAND who continued her excellent sprinting winning the 80m and 150m.
Other winners on the day saw Leo ADAMSON win the high jump at one of his first attempts at the event in the under 13 boys and Emma ROBINSON win the under 13 girls Javelin at her first attempt.
As is proving the case at most events locally Stephanie OCONNOR won the 200m and Kate PATTISON the Shot and Discus both just outside their personal bests in the under 15 Girls. The victory count was rounded off by Shani STATHERS winning the Javelin and Freya BRADSHAW the Long Jump in the under 17 girls.
