Adam claims first County Championship of the season

(Report by Matt Hammond)

Scunthorpe and District Athletics club put out a strong contingent of 16 athletes for the first of 4 meetings in the Humberside Track League which was held at Grimsby. The track league is used by many local clubs to give their young and new athletes a first chance of experiencing competition, also the league is used to run some county championship events for the younger athletes. Pride of place at this first meeting went to Adam HARRISON who claimed the first County championship of the track and field season when he won the under 13 triathlete event. Adam was competing in this three event competition alongside club college Mitchell BAILES. Adam was to prove dominant winning the Long Jump and Javelin as well as finishing second in the 100m giving him overall victory by nearly 80 points. Mitchell came second in the 800m and Javelin but could only claim 5th place overall but was only 30 points behind third place.

In  the under 11 girls Emily STRICKLAND continued her excellent early season form winning three events the 80m, 150m and 600m. The 80m was another club record adding to the 60m record she claimed the week before. Not far behind was Amelia GEDDES who came third in both the 80m and 150m before finishing second in the Wizzer. The only entry in the under 13 girls was Georgia BONES but this didn’t stop her coming away with a victory in the shot. The Under 15 Girls saw two athletes who have had different starts to the season Kate PATTISON continued with her excellent start winning the Discus pushing her club record even further then winning the Shot. She then had a rare outing over the 100m showing the speed that helps her favourite throwing events. Team mate Ellie STANDERLINE has struggled with early season form but showed she is starting to return to form with second in the 100m and a win in the long jump.

The under 15 boys saw Anthony GILLATT produce a trio of personal bests in the throwing events when he came second in the shot and discus then won the javelin. Also in this age group Andrew HARMES had an outing in the rarely run 800m walk then continued with his comeback in the 80m hurdles which he also won. Tyler LEY had his first outing of the year winning both the 100m and 200m before team mate Tom CARLYON made it a clean sweep in under 17 sprint the sprint events winning the 400m.This was then carried on in the under 20’s men when Dominic GREEN continued to show his improvement this year winning the 100m and 200m.

The following day the athletes moved to Sheffield to compete in the Sheffield festival of athletics one of the biggest open meetings in the area. Yet again the youngsters came away with a host of medals. Leading the way were two more sprinters this time it were the female members of the club leading the way. With both Stephanie O’CONNOR in the under 15 girls and Alice KAYE in the under 17 women winning bronze medals in the 100m before both winning gold in their favoured 200m. For Alice it was to prove a well come return to form and her 200m time saw her better the English schools qualifying mark. Also in the medals were Anthony GILLATT and Andrew HARMES in the under 15 boys. Anthony claimed second in the shot and third in the long jump, while Andrew put over 5 metres on his javelin best to claim third place. The final medal came in the under 20 pole vault were Daniel Harmes won the under 20 men’s pole vault but had to retire at 2.80m having come down heavy on the bar with his back. Daniel who has been jumping nearly a metre higher in training will be hoping to go a lot higher in the near future.
