Wesley impresses at first event

6 members of the Scunthorpe and District athletic Club were the only representatives from North Lincolnshire schools in the Humberside Schools Multi Events Championships.   Under the guidance of Scunthorpe’s multi events coach Dave HARMES it proved to be a successful day.

In the Junior Boys section, school year 8 and 9, the event turned into a club championships with all 4 competitors coming from the Scunthorpe club.  The event also saw new club member Wesley WILLIAMS competing in his first event and making an impressive debut.  The event was won by Jacob HAMMOND who is now concentrating on multi event competitions and added over 400 points to his total from last year when he finished second.  The boys pentathlon consisted of 80m hurdles, long jump, shot putt, High Jump and 800m and Jacob achieved his score by setting a new best in the shot of 9.03m and only just been behind his bests in the other events.  Wesley was to finish in second place and was his first attempt at many of the events.   His best event proved to be the Long jump where he managed to match Jacob’s performance of 4.41m.   Also competing was Anthony GILLATT who despite carrying an injury managed third place, again recording a good performance in the shot putt then setting a new best in the high jump.  The fourth competitor was Andrew HARMESS who despite struggling with some of the events set a new personal best in the high jump.

The intermediate girls event also saw the only competitors coming from the Scunthorpe club.  The girls would normally do a Heptathlon over 2 days but at the trials they also competed a penthalon.   The event was won by Georgina OCONNOR who set new personal bests in the high jump and Javelin.  Close behind was Shani STATHERS who achieved a good performance in the high jump but then after injuring her back in the javelin had to pull out of the final event the 800m.

All of the competitors will now hope to be selected to represent Humberside schools at the north east regional event were they will have a chance to win selection for the English schools multi events finals.
