Emily hits the gold trail
On Sunday 11th April, 17 Scunthorpe and District athletes made the short trip across the Humber Bridge to compete in the Kingston upon Hull open meeting. Unfortunately the warm weather of the day before disappeared and the athletes were faced with another cold and windy day. However, there was some good news for the sprinters with a strong breeze down the home straight.
As well as the usual athletes chasing times and distances the club saw two new faces competing in open competition and both made excellent starts to their athletic career. First was Emily STRICKLAND competing in the under 11 girls. The club has a large number of very young athletes training under the guidance of club coaches Gary and Debbie SPINDLEY and Emily showed what talent there is in the group when she won three gold medals. The first two were in the 60m and 150m sprints events where her 60m time was a new club record and both her times would have won medals in the boys events. She then showed her strength by also winning the 600m, again in a time that would have won a medal in the boys’ event.
Competing in the u13 boys’ event was Leo Adamson who has recently joined the club and is a training partner of Emily's. This was one of Leo's first competitions and he was rewarded with a bronze medal in the Long Jump this is an event that he has inherited his talent from his mother who was a top Junior Long Jumper for Barton and district athletic club in her school days. Leo then backed up his performance with 4th in the 80m and 7th in the 150m.
The other two members of the training group competing were Luke GRAY and George CARLYON both just missed out on medals when Luke finished 4th in the 150m and George was 4th in the 600m. Also in the Under 13's was middle distance star Mitchell BAILES who because of a recent chest infection only competed in the Javelin but didn't leave empty handed winning a bronze medal.
The medals then continued in the u15 age groups where firstly the girls won 3 medals with Steph O'CONNOR gaining a bronze medal in the 200m in a time only 0.2 seconds outside the English schools finals qualifying mark and then Kate PATTISON won a gold medal in the shot putt in a new personal best, before competing in the under 17 Discus to win again in a new PB. Both results cement her top 10 ranking in the country. Not to be out done the u15 boys won 3 medals with Alex MERRILLS winning a silver in the shot putt, where Anthony GILLIATT won a bronze. The bravest performance of the day probably came from Andrew HARMES who was competing in the hurdles event for the first time since breaking his arm last year in a training accident when going over the hurdles. Andrew came through the race unscaved and won a silver medal.
The medals then continued in the older age groups firstly in the under 17's where Georgina O'CONNOR won three medals with silver in High Jump and Long Jump and a bronze in the 80m Hurdles and Beth PATTISON competing in her first 200m for 12 months following injury came away with a well deserved silver medal. Tom CARLYON was competing in his new event of 400m having swapped his training from the shorter sprint events this winter. Training is obviously going well with Tom winning the event in a new personal best however he still needs to learn how to judge the event having to hang on over the final 50m for victory having set off slightly too fast over the first 100m.
The Under 20's age group then kept the medals coming. Firstly in the ladies event Sophie CROFT won both the 100m and 200m. The 100m was a new personal best and the 200m was under the qualifying time for the English schools finals. Hopefully Sophie will get even quicker as the weather gets warmer.
The under 20's men saw a sprint battle between Dom GREEN and Daniel HARMES. Dan initially gained the upper hand in the 100m finishing in bronze medal position to Dom's 5th place this was then reversed when Dom was given the silver medal in the 200m to Dan's Bronze after both athletes finished on the same time. Both runs were new Personal bests for DOM. Not to be outdone Dan then showed his multi events skills by winning the high jump.
The only senior athlete to compete was Karl McDonagh who Tom Carlyon has been training alongside. Karl finished in 3rd place but will be slightly disappointed with his time after quick 600m and 300m times recently
