Golden day for Scunthorpe Athletes
36 members of Scunthorpe and district athletics club headed to Costello stadium in Hull for the 37th Humberside county athletics championships. Over the last 2 years the championships have been held jointly with Yorkshire Athletics association at Sheffield, But due to Yorkshire coming up with the strange decision that they wanted to go it alone this year, the Humberside championships returned to its own boundaries.
It was to be a day of strong winds, sunshine and heavy showers, but the Scunthorpe athletes were to prove every cloud has a silver lining or perhaps a golden one when they returned with 61 medals, 26 of those were Gold meaning the club can now boast 20 Humberside County champions.
The youngest of which is 9yr old Joshua LUGSDEN who was competing in his first championships and came away with a hat trick of gold medals in under 11’s 80m , 150m and 600m the later event saw him storm away form the rest of the field from gun to tape. Team mate William TATE showed that the clubs development programme is looking rosy when he gained a silver medal in the 80m and bronze in the 150m behind Joshua.
Perhaps the strongest age group in the club at the moment is the under 17 men who claimed 5 titles between them even more impressive is that 3 of them are still only 15 and will still be eligible in this age group next year. Leading the way was sprint star Nathan TOGUN who claimed a sprint double winning the 100m and 200m. Setting a new best in the 100m despite running into a strong head wind. He was closely followed by Alex NABIAS who won the 400m, Jacob HAMMOND and Anthony GILLATT both came away with 3 medals, Jacob gained a full set winning gold in the High Jump, silver in the 400m Hurdles and Bronze in the 100m Hurdles, whilst Anthony won Gold in the Hammer and bronze in both the discus and Shot Putt.
However the Girls were not be outdone with the under 17 ladies close on the boys heels winning 4 titles. The most exciting of which was the 300m which saw team mates Steph O’CONNOR and Freya BRADSHAW running shoulder to shoulder down the home straight , with Steph winning by just 0.1 of a second , Freya had to be content with a silver to add to her gold she had already won in the 300mHurdles earlier in the day. They were joined as Champions by Shanie STATHERS in the Javelin and Elicia BONES in the discus.
Emily STRICKLAND was to maintain her progress in the under 13 age group , where despite been one of the youngest she won a gold in the 70m hurdles and two silvers in 100m and 200m. One of the biggest performances of the day was by Alex LOCKETT in the under 15 girls hammer when her throw of 43.09m not only won the title but propelled her to the top of the under 15 girls UK rankings , not bad for an athlete in her first full year of competition. In the same age group Danni LOVATT was a surprise winner in the Long Jump adding nearly 50cm to her previous best set last year.
The ladies tally of 12 medals was rounded off by Bethan HAMMOND’S and Georgina O’CONNOR’S victory in the under 20 ladies 400m hurdles and 400m. Then a triple victory in the senior ladies throws by Emma GILBERT hammer and Edel MEAGHER in the discus and Shot Putt.
The men were to have the slight upper hand with 14 Gold’s when Ashley WREN not only won the under 20’s Long Jump but set a new championship best performance of 7.29m maintaining his position of second on the UK under 20’s ranking. Josh BONES then won with the triple jump with 14.22m his 5th competition over 14m this year and cementing his position in the top 15 in the UK. The day was then rounded of by Daniel HARMES winning the senior men’s Long Jump and High Jump in the senior men’s event.
Many of the Scunthorpe athletes will now look at progressing to the Northern and UK championships later in the year.
