England U20 and U23 Championships, Bedford, 19th & 20th June 2010

Scunthorpe Youngsters compete on National stage

Following their appearance at the Northern under 20 championships, Sophie Croft and Josh BONES moved onto Bedford to compete at the England Athletics Aviva U20 & U23 Track & Field Championships & World Trials. Both athletes are at the bottom of the under 20 age group and went to the championships with the aim of gaining experience and trying to make the final of their events.

First on was Sophie CROFT competing in the 200m. Sophie was slightly disappointed with her run after failing to proceed past the heats. Her run of 25.86 saw her finish in 6th place and was outside her best recorded the weekend earlier at the Humberside schools championships. Sophie is currently ranked 25th in the country at the 200m and she now moves onto the English schools finals at Birmingham in July.

Josh BONES who went to the event as the Northern u20 champion, had set his aim to make the top 8 in the first three rounds in order to ensure he got through to the final 3 rounds. Josh achieved this with his 3rd round jump of 14.16m his second longest jump ever. He was unable to improve on this although he had a couple of other attempts over 14m and finished in 8th place. After the competition Josh’s dad and coach Neil BONES said ’we are happy to have achieved the aim of finishing in the top 8, but we know there is more to come. Josh seems to have recovered from his injury problems but we are still struggling to get his run up right. His longest jump was actually well behind the take off board, so if we can get that right he will go a lot further.’

Josh is now firmly placed in the top 20 ranked young jumpers in the country and like Sophie heads to Birmingham in July.
