ELLIOTT SHOWS HIS CLASS

8 young members of Scunthorpe and District athletics club ventured down to Leicester this weekend to represent Humberside at the under 13/ 15 Intercounties match. The match saw 7 teams from Humberside, Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and Warwickshire competing over a number of track and field events. Each county selected the best two athletes in each event to compete in an A and B event.
Pride of place went to Elliott STONES who won the final individual race of the day the under 15 boys 1500m.With both the A and B event been run together a field of 14 athletes lined up at the start. The athletes were faced with a very strong wind which although was good for the sprinters it meant it was going to be impossible for the middle distance runners to set fast times. With this in mind the 1500m became a very tactical race which is unusual for young age groups. A group of 8 athletes broke away from the rest of the field and lapped around together watching to see who would break away first. Elliott took up the ideal place on the outside of the group watching to see who would attack first. With 300m to go nobody had made a move so at that point Elliott kicked hard and soon opened up a 5 metre lead , this soon grew as nobody could live with his change of pace and by the end he crossed the line nearly 20 metres in the lead. Although nearly 10 seconds slower than his best time Elliott showed is able to cope with most races and will now hope he can find a race in less windy conditions so he can lower his best. But that wasn’t to be the end of Elliott’s day for having waited all day to race he had approximately 30 minutes rest before he lined up for the 400m leg in the medley relay. Elliott then showed his fitness again when he handed over in third place with a leg under 59 seconds.
The under 15 boys has proved a strong age group for Scunthorpe and there were another 3 boys lined up for the county. Nathan TOGUN was the only other individual winner when he won the ‘B’ event Discus then with there been no Triple jump his favourite event he showed his jumping prowess finishing 6th in the ‘A’ long jump. Another athlete who missed out on his favourite event because it was missing from the time table was Anthony GILLATT who had been setting club records recently in the hammer. This time Anthony had to make do with the Javelin and the shot, first he set a new best in the Javelin finishing 6th in the ‘A’ event before taking 4th in the B shot putt just behind his best. The javelin saw SCUNTHORPE providing both athletes with Jacob HAMMOND competing in the B event where he took 3rd place. Although he might have done better if after the second round he hadn’t had to hot foot it down to the 800m start where despite the lack of a full warm up he finished in 6th only just missing his best by 0.3 of a second, like Elliott he would surely of set a new best in better conditions. Earlier in the day Jacob had finished in 4th place in the B hurdles race again only missing his best by a fraction of a second.
The under 15 Girls saw two Scunthorpe athletes competing Steph OCONNOR lined up for a sprint double qualifying for both the 100m and 200m. The 100m saw her finish second in the B event before she lined up in the A 200m and smash her Personal best to finish in second place. The other athlete was Ellie STANDERLINE who just missed out been picked in her favourite sprint event but still made selection in the Shot Putt and Long Jump.finishing 7th and 6th in the B events. However with another year in the age group she will no doubt win many more county vests. Both girls also formed part of the 4x200m relay team and helped the team to a strong 4th place
Finally Mitchell BAILES and Harry MATHEAU RAVEN both got selected for one event each in the under 13 boys. Mitchell competed in the shot putt finishing 7th and Harry ran the second leg of the 4x100m helping the team to 4th place. Harry who only joined the club during the season has done very well been selected after only several months competing.
