Club Championships

The track and field club championships are held in early October every year and are generally the final meeting of the season. Held at Quibell Park, they are open to members of both the track and field and road running sections of the club. They are an ideal opportunity for athletes to try out some events that perhaps they would not regularly participate in, as well as trying to beat the friends they have been training with over the season.

The championships are split into age categories from under 9 up to veterans, with boys and girls competing in separate races. All athletes participate in the events listed below for their age group. Depending on their times and distances they are awarded points, which are accumulated over all of their events. The points are added up to identify finishing positions for the championships.

The event is unique in that no results are made available to the athletes on the day. The final results are made available at the annual track and field presentation evening, which is generally held around a fortnight later.

Athletes compete in the following events

under 9 and under 11 100m, long jump and 800m

under 13 100m, long jump, shot putt and 800m

under 15 girls 100m, long jump, shot putt and 800m

Under 15 boys 100m, long jump, shot putt and 1500m

Under 17/Junior/senior/veteran 100m, long jump, shot putt, 400m. In addition the women do 800m and the men 1500m.

Winter Warm up

The annual winter warm up is held every year in mid March at Quibell Park. It is traditionally regarded as being the first track and field meeting of the new season. It is slightly different from traditional meetings in that non-standard distances are competed such as 80m, 150m, 300m, 600m and 1000m. The event is an open meeting, whereby athletes from any club can enter. All age groups from under 11 to senior are catered for.

It is an ideal opportunity for athletes to assess how well their winter training has gone.

Young Athletes League

A national league similar to that in football where clubs compete against each other in a match situation and points are accumulated. There is promotion and relegation in each division with the lower divisions being regionalised and the premier divisions being eligible for a national final. Athletes eligible are under 13, under 15 and under 17.

Athletes can compete in a maximum of three individual events plus a relay but can only run in one track event of 800m or over. Two athletes are allowed from each club in each event, an A and B runner. The team is chosen by the team manager who decides which events the athletes will contest. Every effort is made to put athletes into their prefered events but in order to gain as many points as possible and therefore gain a higher level of competition through promotion athletes should be prepared to do other events outside their usual events. The best male and female track and field performances on the day are rewarded with athlete of the match awards. Athletes are limited to one award each season.

Schools Athletics

Coordinated through the English Schools Athletics Association (see links page) schools athletics mainly starts at senior school. Age groups are

Y7 = Minors

Y8 & 9 = Juniors

Y10 & 11 = Inters

Y12 & 13 = Seniors (college students)

In this region athletes compete at the North Lincolnshire Schools trials and are enterd by their school. If selected they compete at the Humberside schools championships where the winner and runner up in each event are chosen to represent the county at inter county matches. Athletes can also qualify for the English Schools Championships by achieving a set qualifying time, distance or hieght. If this standard is achieved then they must get a signed confirmation from the track or field referee and forward it to the county schools secretary. The county then select the team for these championships based on these achieved standards. An athlete can only compete in one event at the English Schools Championships even if they qualify for more than one.

There is also the Schools Multi Events Championships which is open to juniors and above. Athletes compete in the following events:

Junior Girls & Boys - Pentathlon (Hurdles,LJ,HJ,SP,800m)

Inter & Senior Girls - Heptathlon (Hurdles,LJ,HJ,SP,JT,200m,800m)

Inter Boys - Octathlon (Hurdles,LJ,HJ,JT,SP,DT,400m,1500m)

Senior Boys - Decathlon ( as Octhathlon plus PV & 100m)

Entry is direct to the county championship via the school and the top four go forward as a team to the North East Regional Championships. At these championships the winning team plus the next best three individuals qualify for the National Finals in September each year.

UK Schools Games

The UK Schools Games are the biggest single schools sporting competition in the UK and include many other sports. Selection for these games is based on the number one ranked athlete in the U17 age group in a particular event in the region. In our case this is Yorkshire & Humberside. Again it is one event per person. The team is selected by England Athletics based in Sheffield and athletes chosen will spend up to five days living the "Olympic" lifestyle.
