Come and be part of our new army of coaches

An invitation from Matt Hammond our Club Communications, Press and Publicity Officer

In the last month I have gone through my level 1 and the core part of my level 2 coaches’ courses. Although I have been involved in athletics on and off for 30 years I like most of you had very little idea about the coaching qualifications within the UKA set up (when I first retired 10 years ago it was still the AAA).So here goes with a basic guide of what is involved with the courses.

Level 1 – best described as been an assistant coach. This is a one day course which it is very much pitched at volunteers who have only a basic knowledge of athletics. It is not a pass or fail course you will get a basic knowledge of what’s involved in different events and a better idea of how to coach. At the end you will get a licence and liability cover which enables you to ASSIST level 2 coaches and above  such as DEBBIE and GARY.

Level 2- this is next step up and will eventually get you to be a lead coach. The course is split into two sections , first is the core section which is a two day course where you will be given a better insight into planning / delivering / feedback of all events. Next is a one day course about 6 weeks later where you look at a specific event i.e throws, sprints, jumps or endurance. At the end of the day you will be expected to deliver a 15 minute coaching plan on your chosen area. Although this is a pass or fail, the tutors on the course will do everything they can to help you pass. If there are still areas you need to work on you can go back to your club and gain the necessary experience.

My level 2 course couldn’t have had a more diverse group on it. We have had Olympic athletes, foreign students, mums, dads  and even an elderly official who had not coached before doing her level 1. It has been a very enjoyable 2 days and nobody has been criticised for lack of knowledge, I have had a mum in her 40’s teach this 16 stone thrower about triple jumping, something she had never coached before in her life.

My reason for writing this basic guide is that the club still needs more coaches in order to grow. I don’t know if everybody is aware but we currently have a waiting list for the under 13’s !!!.

We have sent 6 coaches this weekend on the level 2 (5 from track and field and 1 from the road section), then in December 3 more from the road section are attending a course. (Hopefully by FEB next year we will have 7 more coaches in the club). This sounds a lot but isn’t enough so we want more volunteers to get qualified. The club will pay for the course and even help with travelling expenses all we ask is your help at the club. If you fancy having a go please contact the new coaches’ development officer Daniel HARMES
