Mitchell represents Humberside against Yorkshires best (Report by Matt Hammond)
Following on from earlier in the year when Scunthorpe and District young athlete Mitchell Bailes was selected to represent South Humberside in the Aviva Sports hall Athletics challenge held at the English Institute of sport at Sheffield. Mitchell’s impressive performance earned him a call up for the Humberside team as part of the Under 13’s boy’s squad at the Regional Sports hall athletics finals held at North Bridge Leisure Centre Halifax against teams from North, South and West Yorkshire.
Sports hall Athletics was created in the United Kingdom by George Bunner in 1976 to introduce young people to the joy of athletics, he encouraged them with inventions such as the Reversaboard which enabled athletes to strike and turn in the same movement and run in the opposite direction. Soon most athletic events were made possible within a sports hall environment. Sports hall Athletics emphasises the importance of team competition, fair play and the fact that taking part and trying your hardest is more important than winning. Sports hall is an activity that can bring together young people across the globe in energetic competition and lasting friendship.

Mitchell was the youngest member of the team, and was the only athlete chosen from the Scunthorpe area. Despite only just moving up to the under 13 age group after Christmas, Mitchell gave a good account of himself. Finishing 5th in the 6 lap race and 5th in the standing long jump. His performances aided the Humberside team in gaining second place overall against much bigger teams from their Yorkshire rivals.
Sarah finishes the winter on a high (Report by Matt Hammond)
This winter has seen Sarah KEMSHALL flourish whilst competing for both Scunthorpe and district Athletics club and Leeds Metropolitan University. First she showed her strength on the country achieving 33rd place in the Northern Counties Cross country championships an excellent performance against some of the best cross country runners in the country. She then switched her attention to re writing her best times on the indoor circuit. First was a time of 2.20.3 for the 800m a new club record indoors, and 4.46.8 in the 1500m, just outside the club record set last year by her twin sister Jane. Both times were set whilst competing in the RAF & Inter Universities Championships. Sarah then turned her attention to the 3,000m at the British university indoor Championships which were held in Sheffield at the end of March. Last year saw Sarah finish in 8th place at her first attempt in the championships. This year a large field of 16 athletes on the small indoor track saw Sarah rewarded for following the quick early pace to record a time of 10.05 mins which smashed her previous best by 16 seconds and ranks her 28th in the country indoors this winter. The only disappointment was that she finished just outside the medals in 4th place.

Sarah hopes to now take her excellent winter form into the summer track season which will see her competing for Scunthorpe in division 2 of the Northern league as well as representing her University.

26th February 2010 - Scunthorpe stars selected for International tour (report by Matt Hammond)
Scunthorpe and District athletic club’s young stars Ashley WREN (pictured left) and Josh BONES (pictured right) have been rewarded for their outstanding 2009 medal winning performances with selection to the Northern Athletics team who are to train and compete in Malta in April this year.
This is the Fourth year that Northern Athletics will take a team of up to 20 young stars on the 5 day tour to Malta. The team will be based at MARSA which is the home of Malta AAA and the site of the islands only international standard track. The team will travel out on 8th April from Manchester airport and the young athletes will have time to acclimatise and train before the competition.
The team is been organised by Northern Athletics administrator Sandra WHITE from Sheffield. Sandra said ‘This is a great opportunity for the young athletes to experience international competition. At the moment there are teams from Malta, Sweden and Wales confirmed as competing we also believe there will be teams from Libya, Egypt and Tunisia. In order to win selection athletes have to be over 16 and ranked in the top 12 for their event nationally. Hopefully this year the weather will be kinder to us as last year was more suited to a rainy day in England than a sunshine island abroad ‘
Last year Rachel ROBINSON was the first Scunthorpe athlete to win a place on the tour, however Rachel had the misfortune of failing ill shortly after arriving in Malta and was unable to compete.
This year there will be a third Scunthorpe and district athlete on the tour in the form of Steve BORRILL who will travel as team Physio. Steve is well known in the area offering advice and treatment of sports injuries and can offer a unique insight as a competitive athlete himself.
Scunthorpe and district press officer Matt HAMMOND said ‘We are very proud of our young athletes who have been bringing the name of Scunthorpe to the fore of Northern athletics and will now have an opportunity to do that internationally. Maybe one day a team from Malta would like to experience the delights of the English weather at our Winter warm up meeting in March.’
