2012

The Scunthorpe and District Athletic Club promises to support the London 2012 Olympics in whatever way it can and will offer help to any athlete, parent, guardian, official or volunteer who wish to make a serious commitment to this 2012 venture.

The Scunthorpe and District Athletic Club fully recognises the potential for some of the Club’s athletes to be able to meet the exacting standards for Olympic entry but equally acknowledges that the selection of any athlete may well be minimal.

Regardless of what may happen in the years and months approaching 2012 it is vitally important that we all regularly support the endeavours of all our athletes and not just the ‘chosen ones’.

You will all be aware that support for athletics events often peaks prior to and during the Olympic Games but the real support is most needed when our athletes are training and competing outside of these 4 year cycles.

The London 2012 Olympics Organisation is seeking volunteers (see detail right) but also encourages those volunteers to get involved locally.

If you wish to volunteer please click on the London Olympic Logo (right) but please remember that we also need you.

Whatever your skills, qualifications or training, please remember that we need you too.  You don’t need an ‘A’ level to rake a sand pit.

Please support us.

Will you volunteer?

Recruitment will start in 2010 when the Olympic Organisors will recruit volunteers from across the UK – from a range of communities and backgrounds.  The recruitment process will be transparent, open and fair and applicants who meet the criteria and  bring passion, enthusiasm and energy to the Games are most likely to be accepted.

Previous volunteering experience is not necessary.

Each successful applicant will be given a specific role, allowing them to contribute meaningfully to the Games. There will be two kinds of Games volunteer – specialist and generalist.

  • Specialist volunteers will have specific existing skills or qualifications that are needed for them to complete the role – for example, sport or medical training.
  • Generalist volunteers will not need any special skills or qualifications and will receive full training. They might be given roles in areas such as event services, uniform distribution and Village operations

All volunteers will be expected to attend training events that will give them the knowledge they need to carry out their role.

Volunteering in your local community

There are lots of charities and sporting organisations that are looking for volunteers to help them. While you are waiting for applications for the London 2012 volunteer programme to open in 2010 why not consider getting involved locally?
