Indoor Competitions

The 2011 indoor season continued into the new year with the England Athletics Senior Combined Events Championships at the EIS in Sheffield. Daniel Harmes flew the flag for Scunthorpe, and acquitted himself very well against high calibre competition. A week later saw the same venue welcome 13 SADAC athletes competing in the Northern Athletics Indoor Championships, across the full range of ages from under 15’s to seniors. Two of the above athletes returned with medals, Kate Pattison securing silver in the under 15 girls shot put, and Josh Bones taking the bronze medal in the under 20 mens triple jump. The Northern Masters quickly followed, with our resident throws coach Matt Hammond placing seventh overall, but a very creditable 2nd in the male over 40 section shot put..

The England Athletics Under 20 National Indoor Championships at the NIA in Birmingham was yet again very well represented by the club, with four athletes achieving the high qualifying standards to be able to test themselves against the best in the UK. Nathan Togun applied himself extremely well in his very first major competition in the under 17 boys 60 metres, and will have gained an immense amount of experience from the weekend. Josh Bones also managed a very commendable 6th place in the under 20 mens triple jump, and then tested himself in his second choice event on the Sunday, placing 14th in the long jump. Ashley Wren produced a stunning series of jumps in the same event, progressing with every round, to finish 25cm ahead of his previous pb with a huge leap of 7.11 metres. This distance saw him cruelly robbed of the bronze medal in the very final round when the eventual winner leaped to 7.23 metres. Nevertheless, this represents significant progress for Ashley, and bodes extremely well for the outdoor season. Finally, in her last competition in Scunthorpe colours before her switch to KUHAC, Kate Pattison achieved a magnificent bronze medal in the under 15 girls shot put. Very well done Kate, and even though you will now be competing for Hull, everyone at Scunthorpe and District wishes you all the very best for the future.

Outdoor season

Remarkably, the outdoor season is now upon us , and has already borne witness to the first competitive action of 2011. Dave Harmes took a number of his athletes to Blackpool for their annual season curtain raiser, and without doubt, everyone performed extremely well, with a number of personal bests to boot.

Next is the SCUNTHORPE AND DISTRICT WINTER WARM UP, being held on Sunday 27th March. Here’s hoping for great weather and a very enjoyable day for atheletes and officials / helpers alike.

Coaching

One of the clubs horizontal jumps coaches, Neill Bones, attended the annual UK Athletics Jumps Camp over the weekend of 12th and 13th March. This was for all UK senior jumps coaches as well as coaches on the NCDP (National Coach Development Programme). In attendance was Robert Emmiyan, the Russian long jumper who achieved a best distance of 8.86 metres to remain the fourth longest jumper in history. The advice and feedback that he was able to offer  was absolutely priceless, and together with input from coaches currently working with many Olympic class athletes, the weekend was an invaluable source of information that the club can only benefit from in the future.

Training day

The club secured the sole use of the first class indoor facilities at the EIS in Sheffield recently, and it is wonderful to report that the day was very well attended by both coaches and athletes alike. It proved a great opportunity for the club to train at the venue without the compromise of working around athletes from other clubs, and everyone in attendance agreed that the day was a complete success. Undoubtedly, the possibility of repeating the day next winter will be one that we should all look forward to.

Road Runners

March  2011,

Boxing Day Run 26/12/2010

This turned out to be the biggest flop in the club’s history of doing this run. The fun run was started on time but because the numbers coming for the main run were so few they joined in on an informal basis. Brumby Hall was also not open to go and have a drink so the raffle was held in the changing rooms. The club raised £200 for the red cross which is about half the amount usually raised.

Cleethorpes 10k 01/01/2011

After the  recent cold weather, temperatures of 5 degrees seemed positively balmy and with only a light breeze ideal for running. If you would like to see the results they along with pictures are on the club website under fixtures. The best placed runner from our club was Joshua Reid 19th in 39.03 and the best performance Neil Pattisson  in 44.32. Barbara Gorman made a comeback after injury and other club stalwarts included Roger Lewis, Sam Ritson, Margaret Maisey, and Dave Scott. However  it was disappointing that only 10 members of the road running section took part.

Club 2miles  11/01/2011 and 03/02/2011

The most striking feature of the first race was an entry of 57 (is this a record ) and that it took a while to get going with a traffic jam at the start. The first three on the handicap were Gordon Palmer 12.52 net 7.08 Mick Hemmings 12.50 net 8.19 and Matt Isle 11.22 net 8.25.The fastest times were male Jonathan Maxfield 10.45 and female Rachel Fisk 12.44

The second race had 46 entries with fewer members of the track section taking part. The first three on the handicap were Lisa Vickers18.39 net 8.01 David Vickers11.39 net 8.15 and Rebecca Hollis 16.21 net8.25. The fastest times were male Alberto Legido 10.58 and female Rachel Fisk 12.59.

Club 4 miles 17/02/2011

The first three on the handicap were Amanda Panton 34.55 net 18.53 Martin Welbourne 23.41 net 19.35 and William Cranston 25.12 net 19.45. The fastest times being male Alberto Legido 22.30 and female Lynne Haynes 29.11.

Out and about

At the end of January was the Ferriby 10 which unusually for this race was free of it’s usual hazards of snow and ice or gale force winds although the hill at the end up to the windmill was still there. As a result the two leading runners from the club did fast times being Alberto Legido 60.45 and Gary Crompton 62.21 with 3 others Peter Barnard 67.31 Sam Ritson 77.17 and Kay Southeran 83.14 getting PB’s.

Other results include in the Deepdale Dash Alberto Legido 36.06 and Julian Newell 38.12 with pb’s from Mark York 41.10 and Mark Jackson 41.36. In the Brass monkey half marathon Neil Pattison continued his good start to 2011 with a pb of 1.39.17.

XC & Endurance

At last the weather seems to be warming up so with the cross country season  over may I wish you all luck for the season  ahead as you move onto the track or even that spring marathon.

On the 20th march we had two teams in the northern road relays but unfortunately, due to some illness and injuries, were unable to field complete teams. Despite this the ladies were in second place when they ran out of members, well done Jane, Sarah, Nicola & Lindsay. They have managed to get a full team up for the Nationals on the 9th April so if you would like to go and support them or maybe even be a travelling sub see either Gavin or myself.

The men though had to finish in the top 25 to qualify so we will not be represented again this year but with everybody’s support I feel sure we could next year. So come on and get behind the teams. Running in the relays is not just for elite athletes but is for the whole club, especially when you require a team of 12, and you get a completely different buzz from it in supporting your team and not letting them down as against just running for yourself. If in doubt ask those that went, William was like a puppy he was so excited and had a great run.

There are still some chances to run in relays later in the year, so keep the 24th September free, but even before that we are looking at getting a team into the Masters relays on the 29th May so if you would like to give it a go let Gavin, Scott or myself know.

So congratulations and thanks to all those that ran in the Northerns, Good luck to the ladies at the Nationals and I’ll see you all after I have run my marathon, unfortunately the day after so I can not be there in body but will be in spirit.

Good luck and happy running for the coming months whatever your aims.
